Our Curriculum

QURAN/ARABIC CLASSES

Arabic

Reading, writing and understanding of the Arabic language is of keen interest to us as we believe it will aid our pupils in the understanding and interpretation of the Quran and improve their multilingual skills as Arabic is revealed to be the most spoken language in Africa and 2nd most spoken globally. Arabic reading and story time is also part of our way to ensure proper grasping of the language.

Understanding of Islam (Deen)

Our pupils are encouraged to pursue and practice Knowledge with modesty and humility that leads to beauty and dignity, freedom and justice. The main purpose of acquiring knowledge is to bring us closer to Allah and must be linked with values and goals. Hence the knowledge of the Quran and the Sunnah of the sacred Prophet Muhammad [SAW] are our utmost link with this reality.

“It is also important to remember that the search for knowledge is a life-long process and does not end with the receiving of a certificate.”

Understanding of Islam (Deen) is accomplished through the different sections which all pupils will be exposed to throughout the session

  • AQA’ID (BELIEF)
  • TARIKH AL ISLAM (HISTORY OF ISLAM)
  • AKHLAQ (CHARACTER)
  • FIQH (ISLAMIC LAW)
  • AD’IYAH WA ADAB (SUPPLICATION AND ETTIQUETES)
  • QASAS AL ANBIYA (STORIES OF THE PROPHETS)
  • SIRAT AN-NABIYYIH (STORIES OF LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD (SAW)

OUR EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS) PROFILE (0-5YEARS)

We believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.

In order to build a unique child of our dream

The seven areas of learning and development that must shape educational programs in our early years settings are highlighted below. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. However, three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. These three prime areas are:

Communication and language;

Physical development; and

Personal, social and emotional development.

Our children are also supported in the four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:

Literacy;

Mathematics;

Understanding the world; and

Expressive arts and design.

Summary of each learning area.

Communication and language development involve giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves, and speak and listen in a range of situations.

Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their coordination, control, and movement. Children are also helped to understand the importance of physical activity and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

Personal, social, and emotional development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups, and to have confidence in their own abilities.

Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children are given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest.

Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and describing shapes, spaces, and measures.

Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology, and the environment.

Expressive arts and design involve enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology. Each area of learning and development is implemented through planned, purposeful play and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities. We believe that Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, think about problems, and relate to others. Children learn by leading their own play, and by taking part in play which is guided by adults.

PHYSICAL AND HEALTH

FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT SKILLS are taught from the Reception class through to Year 2 after which detailed sports skills are taught viz basketball, volleyball, handball, football etc. in KS2

WHY TEACH FMS? (FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT SKILLS) Research reveals that children attribute low motor skills as a major barrier to participation in physical activity and drop out from organized sport because they cannot perform the skills well enough to play the game successfully.

Physical activity provides health benefits for children, including:

Providing important protection from developing coronary heart disease;

A longer life with better-managed weight, lower blood pressure, and healthier cholesterol levels;

Healthy growth and development of the cardiorespiratory system as well as bones and muscles; and

Mental and social health benefits include feelings of confidence, happiness, and relaxation as well as an ability to sleep better.

Children who develop confidence with their FMS skills may enjoy many benefits. Those who have a positive attitude to physical activity may have higher self-esteem, improved health and well-being, good social skills, are more willing to take risks, and are also more likely to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle

This is a dream for all pupils of the RY’AN Academy

CURRICULUM MATTERS

Curriculum:

As it would have been observed from the above breakdown, we are keen at providing a broadly based education in a stimulating and productive learning environment. Every child will be given an opportunity to develop their interests and skills.

The Literacy framework is centered on reading, writing, critical thinking, confident presentation of thoughts (Listening & Talking). This framework builds upon the UK National Literacy scheme and We make use of various English Programme including Spelling and Handwriting.

Our Mathematics is mostly centered on the Nigerian curriculum with additional details from the British, Singaporean and Qatar Math. This is aimed at exposing our heroes to all areas of numbers and Analytical Reasoning bearing in mind our Mathematics aim.

Curriculum plans are regularly reviewed and updated. At the beginning of each half term, a curriculum summary will be sent to all parents in order to get adequate information about the curriculum.

Reading:

Reading is a core part of our curriculum that is taught and enforced right from the Early Years all through the Primary. Hence, different strategies have been put in place to ensure the achievement of this viz Picture Reading, Reading through story prompts, Shared Reading, Audio-visual Reading, Individual Guided Reading, and Individual Unguided Reading, General class Reading, Summary and Oral Presentation of story
